George Soros And His Bold Philanthropy

George Soros has certainly had his fair share of wealth and he understands the need to help others with his success. He has made philanthropy through the Open Society Foundation one of the essential aspects of his work. Few billionaires can say they’v donated $18 billion to philanthropy, but then again few can say they’ve had his level of financial success. Recently, philanthropy has been stigmatized in the media and his particular work has been smeared by those on the right seeking cheap political points. Nonetheless, he plans on doing what he can to make philanthropy an important focus point again.

George Soros made himself the world’s most successful hedge fund manager through his careful business acumen. He understood how to make private capital return incredible profits and does so on a worldwide basis. Obviously, success in the world of hedge fund managing requires someone to have considerable capitalist and democratic values. No one manages to succeed in the world of hedge funds by holding onto to Communist values or authoritarianism. This has inspired him to go pursue efforts to spread capitalism to countries that typically haven’t had it before. The Open Society Foundation has played a key role in making that happen everywhere from eastern Europe to South Africa.

Even though his values are hardly similar to those of a socialist, his philanthropy has been attacked as an attempt to destroy western democracy. The claims are themselves bizarre, but they are often espoused by those on the right and the number of people who understand they are far from the truth is far from what it needs to be. Glenn Beck and others on the right are trying to turn him into some sort of demonic prince for their purposes. They often know little about him themselves and simply decide he is going to be their villain for now.

The most disturbing them about these attacks is that they take philanthropy and turn it into something down right evil. Nobody should be of the belief that helping others or doing what is right for the world is an act of corruption. That’s precisely what they are trying to do with these attacks and it’s something that defies any common knowledge of Soros. He has actually helped the world move towards more free markets and he has worked towards making the world more connected.

Despite the villainy being attached to philanthropy, Soros is going to donate more than %18 billion to the Open Society Foundation. He understands the need to make the world a more connected and open place because that’s the only way that people are going to be able to change their lives. If they aren’t allowed to make their own decisions and control their situation, the world economy is going to suffer greatly. Soros does what he does with the interest of other people in mind. That mindset is a rare find among people who obtain his level of wealth but it is certainly something to be welcomed.

George Soros makes Open Society Foundation the second-largest charity foundation

George Soros is among the top richest people in the world, and he is known for his philanthropic activities that have enabled the beneficiaries to achieve their goals. As we speak, George Soros is commanding one of the richest charity organizations in the United States and even globally. Mr. Soros recently transferred $18 billion from his fortune to Open Society Foundation, mapping it among the top philanthropic organizations according to the Wall Street Journal.

Open Society Foundation was started back in the year 1979 and started offering scholarships to Black South Africans during the apartheid as well as supporting justice and equality in more than 120 countries. But in recent times, Open Society Foundation has been concentrating more in the United States as seen in some of its programs including fight against police brutality. According to New York Times, Open Society Foundation helped in setting up treatment centers during the 2014 Ebola epidemic. The foundation also has been spearheading the ‘state healing’ process after the 2016 election. And to show he means business, Mr. Soros channeled $10 million towards preventing post election violence.

Open Society Foundation’s acts align with its mission of building vibrant and tolerant democracies. And since 1979, the foundation has donated almost $14 billion. On the other hand, friends close to George Soros comment that he is a man who has experienced a society where communication and democracy weren’t welcomed. This makes him appreciate its importance because he knows what happens when there is none. George Soros made his fortune in 1992 betting against British pound when it crashed against the European exchange rate. This earned him the name ‘the man who broke the bank of England. Soros is ranked 20th on 400 wealthiest Americans on Forbes Magazine with over $23 billion net worth.

He is a keen supporter of democracy and often fights for the voiceless. George Soros was born in Hungary and grew up during the Nazis wars. He witnessed the brutality done to thousands of Jews and to survive it; his family has to falsify their identity documents. When their methods proved to success, Soros extended the trick to other Hungarians and they all survived.

After the war, Soros went to London where he attended London School of Economics and later graduating with a bachelor’s degree and eventually a master’s degree in philosophy. Soros started his career as a merchant in various banks across England before leaving for the United States where he eventually founded his first hedge fund management company, Double Eagle. He used the profits to start a second firm, Soros Fund Management.

His political taste has for a long time stood in favor of the Democrats. Mr. Soros was the leading donor towards Clinton’s presidential campaign in 2016 US elections. And before, he had supported Obama. But besides this, Soros also shows support to political candidates who have development agendas that would help the public.

Open Society Foundation has offices in New York, Budapest, London, and Brussels with over 1500 staff and annual budget of almost $1 million according to their official website. The foundation channels largest share, 28 percent, of its funds towards democratic and human rights causes. And 23 regional and national leaders partake in determining the distribution mechanism of the grants.
