Georgette Mulheir is a prominent philanthropist worldwide for her efforts to help orphans settle in new families where they are loved and cared for. Over the years after graduating from the University of Sheffield, where she studied Music, Georgette joined social services helping orphans find new homes. She believes that orphanages pose a significant threat to children, and there have been notable cases in the past where children were abused, savaged food, and were killed in accidents.
How the Government Leaves out Orphans in Set Plans
Georgette is creating new opportunities for these children by working at Lumos as a Strategic Global Advisor passionate to end orphanages. Lumos is a prominent NGO dealing with orphans and finding them permanent homes across the world where they feel at home. This advisor believes that everyone deserves a chance to belong somewhere and not in an institution. After relocating to Romania, she helped reduce the number of children in the orphanages from 200,000 to 20,000; this decrease inspired her to move forward to other countries.
Challenges Orphans Face
Georgette Mulheir points out that children in orphanages face significant problems and are neglected by community members and the government. In 2017, when the top world leaders gathered for annual High-level political forums discussing sustainable development, they left out children without families. This situation is one of the cases where such children are not included in government data collections, and with time they have become marginalized and invisible.
How is Georgette Helping Them?
After joining Lumos, Georgette Mulheir saw an opportunity to connect these children with new families. People are looking to adopt such children into their homes and care for them. Methods used by the government don’t capture information regarding children placed in orphanages. This situation leaves them out of national plans, and Georgette is ready to make this change. She has already put thousands into new homes across the world and continues doing the same. Georgette believes that its time to help orphans and most vulnerable children by making them part of their government plan. This plan is possible by placing these children in families that adopt them legally and giving them the right to access government support. She is always in the forefront fighting for the rights of children. Learn more.
