Jack Landsmanas gets up every day thinking about sustainability. As the CEO of one of Mexico’s largest food distribution companies, he views sustainability as more than an academic concept. In a world with more than seven billion people to feed, finding ways to maintain food production is critical as climate change puts new pressure on fundamental resources.

Landsmanas leads Coporativo Kosmos, a company that feeds
three million people every day. That translates to 800 tons of food distributed
across 27 Mexican states daily. Processing food and transporting it to the
end-user is an inherently energy-intensive job, Landsmanas said. That means a
major component of attacking the sustainability issue is finding ways to
transport food using less fuel.

Jack Landsmanas said his company is working on a strategic
plan to streamline food delivery processes. One solution is to build more
warehouse infrastructure in key locations making greater local storage
possible. He said a lot of also gets down to just basics, such as keeping truck
engines well-tuned and making sure all vehicle tires have proper air pressure.
More advanced solutions are on the table, however. That may
include adopting eclectic vehicles charged by alternative energy sources, such
as wind and solar.
