Kevin Plank is an American who was born in 1972 in Kensington. He is the founder and chairperson of Under Armour. The company is in Baltimore that deals with footwear, accessories, and sportswear. After high school, he went to the University of Maryland and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. His philanthropic nature became real when he bought a customized wheelchair for his former playmate.
Before his graduation, Kevin Plank had a seasoned business that he operated during Valentine’s Day. He used to sell flowers to his college mates on campus. The business was able to raise about $3,000, and that used as his capital for Under Armour. When he started the company, he was financially constrained, and he used his former playmates as his first customers. For his business premises, he opted for his car and from a basement in Georgetown, New York, at his grandmother’s place.
Kevin Plank got the idea of Under Armour from his former playmates. They were into the idea of getting comfortable t-shirts that were absorbent, soft, and comfortable. He was able to use the New York premise for some time before getting more sales and expand. His first direct sales were from Georgia Tech that amounted to $17,000.
Kevin Plank decided to place an advert at the ESPN magazine for $25,000, and their sales shoot to $1 million. By the end of 2010, their sales turnover was about $1 billion, and the staff members grew to over 15,000.
He went ahead and bought a 600-acre farmhouse that houses over 100 horses. He ventured in real estate and started Plank Industries that expanded to a $5 billion venture in the Port Covington area. The entity built for retail space, parks, and offices and Kevin made his donation through the Cupid Foundation and the CollegeBound.
He has been an active member of Washington D.C and Baltimore communities. He was able to donate around $5 million to the UA House. He even pledged to the University of Maryland in 2014 and given $25 for the academic and athletics complex. He promised an additional $16 million to St, John’s College School, and the Archdiocese of Baltimore.
