In Chang’an, Jiangsu is where Richard Liu Qiangdong was born. The village lived poverty-stricken families. Liu lived with his parents and grandparents. The rise of communism in the late 1940s is what pushed Liu’s family into the village. Before then, they were wealthy merchants who transported goods using their ships from north of Beijing to south of Beijing along the Yangtze River. Despite the challenges of lacking good roads, running water, and electricity, nutritious food was also a big problem. In a whole year, they interchanged corn meals with sweet potatoes.

During the season of corn, they would prepare corn porridge, pancakes, and cornbread. When it was season for sweet potatoes, they would either boil, dry, or prepare pancakes. Since this is the area Richard Liu learned his studies to the high school level, he wasn’t ready to go to local colleges anymore.

Richard Liu learned hard to pass the college exams; he applied for campuses in big towns. Luckily, God heard his prayers and won a slot at Renmin Campus. Since the village families saw his potential of becoming great, they helped his parents raise the seventy-five-dollar train ticket.

Joining Renmin University was the start of Liu’s journey to success. The side training, he did in his free time while at his part-time job was his life-charger. Before the demand for computer programmers rose, Richard was already a pro. Qiangdong scooped the opportunity that saw him do good things, the best being helping him get capital to start a tech company in 1998.

JD.com, which is shaking the tech industry worldwide, started with less than two thousand dollars. The company has experienced vast growth thanks to the outstanding leadership of Richard Liu.

To minimize the delivery delays that were experienced, in 2007, it became the distributor of its goods, and clients are happy to get their goods the same day or the next day. The company is very profitable. In 2019, it made almost ninety billion in revenue. See this page to learn more.
