Earlier this year, the Jewish University of America hosted a lecture called “Doing Business for Good” through Zoom. In this conversation, the Dean of the School of Business & Law of AJU invited Kfir Gavrieli, David Groshoff, and Joe Sanberg to talk about the changing nature of entrepreneurship, social justice, and corporate giving. Joe Sanberg is the Aspiration Inc. founder, a socially conscious online financial firm.
Kfir Gavrieli is the Tieks originator. Gavrieli holds a Bachelor of Arts, Masters, and MBA degrees from Stanford University, and has worked in venture capital, technology, and real estate.
These two men are well qualified to talk about authentic giving and entrepreneurship intersection. Tieks was started in 2008 but launched in 2010. Forbes ranked it as among the 25 most innovative consumer brands. With Aspiration, more than 2 million customers can know where their money is going, what it is doing, and how to use it more responsibly.
Joe also founded Golden State Opportunity, where he aided 3 million low-income Californians to receive more than $6 billion in tax credits. On the other hand, Gavrieli Foundation that was established by Kfir has donated more than $10 million to needy women entrepreneurs across the world.
To start the conversation, Grosshoff asked entrepreneurs how businessmen should consider starting a business, and what it means to start a business that is not designed to create maximum value for shareholders at all costs.
Sanberg took this as an opportunity to highlight some important issues. He believes that the “priceless” model used by the company is a strategy that contradicts hundreds of years of theory and history, and has only gained popularity in the past 45 years. According to him, the most important thing a company can do is to create value while serving customers.
Sanberg explained how the economy serves the fewest people, forcing others to live a salary-to-salary life, which is only effective for the owner, but not sustainable. It creates an economic environment where there are thousands of people without money, and rich people do not need to purchase anything.
